T21-1 Implementation

Our Implement section is where we get a bit more technical. Of course that means that some people will find it easier than others. This week we have two relatively small tasks because you would by now have already set up a blog and that has a technical component too.

Task 1. Embed the video Mr Winkle Wakes into your blog and write an appropriate introduction. Here is a short tutorial to show you how. Use this link if the video is not embedded below.

PS. To see the embed code in YouTube, you now need to click Share (under the video) then click Embed. Note that there is also an option below the embed code to choose your video display size. If you embed multiple videos on the same page it looks tidier if they are all the same size.



Note that in Blogger you can paste the embed code into the page in Compose mode. In some applications you need to first switch to edit HTML view or code view first.

Task 2. Explore iTunes U and then find a specific video in iTunes U and comment on this video in your blog.
This video requires iTunes. If you do not have iTunes installed on your computer, you can download it free from http://www.apple.com/itunes/. You may think that iTunes and iPods are all about music and videos, but there is a wealth of free educational material available from the iTunes store.
Once iTunes is installed, click the link to the iTunes store. Never mind all the advertising for music, look for the link to iTunes U. At the time of writing, iTunes 11.03 was the current version and the link to iTunes U was located in the black menu bar on the right hand side. When later versions are released, the layout may change.
Much of the material is targeted for higher education but some university sites have professional development material for K-12 teachers. You will see a link for K-12. Browse this site to get a feel for the range of content.
Another good way to find material is to use the search box in the top right with the magnifying glass. You can search by category and key terms, or by the names of the presenters. Try a search for the clever sheep.

 

Now we need to find a presentation by Marco Torres and Donald Henderson. Unfortunately, this video is not well indexed and is difficult to find it by searching so use this link to go straight to it. It will open iTunes first, then the iTunes Store and then display a list of videos from the Microcomputers in Education Conference. the one we want is called Marco Torres - Donald Henderson presentations. Click Get to download the video. It is 1 hour long, but the most relevant part for us now is in the first 17 minutes, especially from 13:00 – 17:00.

Report on your Tasks.

1. Once you have finished these Implement tasks, post a message to the Implementation forum incorporating the following points.
   • Comment about your experience in doing these tasks and include a link to your blog post for this Implement task.
   • The iTunes video with Torres and Henderson distinguishes between doing things in a different way and doing different things. Give examples of where you have used technology to do things in a different way and to do different things (or have seen other teachers do this).
   • What benefit can you see in embedding a YouTube video in a web page, rather than linking to the same video in YouTube?
2. Respond to the implementation posts of at least two other people by posting replies.
