When your class is doing digital stories you need to be aware of copyright issues. Here are some resources to give you guidance.

• Education World (2004) The Educator's Guide to Copyright and Fair Use.
• Technology & Learning Magazine (2004) Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers Chart (PDF).
• Digitales (2004) Are You Copyright Savvy?
• Smartcopying. This site is specifically for Australian schools and TAFE colleges.
• Different countries have their own variations on copyright. You may need to do a web search to find information specific to your country.

Creative Commons is an alternative to the traditional use of copyright.

Finding material that you can reuse without breaching copyright.

• Housley, S. How and Where to Locate Podsafe Music.
• Podsafe Audio is one of the sites mentioned in Sharon Housley's article.
• Google advanced image search. Most people are familiar with Google's image search, but did you notice the small link to Advanced image search? For digital storytelling, image size is important, so change size to large and usage rights to labelled for reuse. Flikr also has an advanced search mode which enables you to specify Creative Commons licensed content. (Creative Commons licensing is explored more in week 6.)
